My 1969 Dodge Charger, "Christine," was first sold in the Tidewater area of Virginia to an Air Force sergeant; he special-ordered it from the factory upon his return from Vietnam. The items he checked off of the "option/make-it-my-own" list are as follows: Vinyl top, R-4 red lacquer paint, right-hand mirror, left-hand remote, deluxe 5-spoke wheel covers, bumper guards front & rear, 383 Magnum engine, factory rated 335 bhp, 425 ft lbs of torque, mated to a 727 Torqueflite 3 speed automatic. Of importance was the police package option that provided a stiffer front anti-sway bar, firm-feel power steering, front disc, dual-caliper power brakes, with larger 11" drums at the rear and five and a half leaves in the right spring pack and six in the left to handle the high amount of torque. Some comfort/convenience options include: Chrysler Airtemp air conditioning, light package that included hood-mounted turn signals, headlight-on warning buzzer, dash-map light, glove box, ash tray, console and trunk lights with a time delay ignition switch light that stayed on 20 seconds after the driver's door closed to facilitate finding the keyhole. 3-speed wipers, center console, wood trim steering wheel, Musicmaster AM radio, day/night rear-view mirror. I used to see the Charger while I was stationed at Langley in the early 80's and told the owner if he EVER decided to sell her to contact me. Well his second wife did not like the car because it used too much gas. So the summer of 1985 Gordon called me and we sealed the deal over the phone. He drove, non-stop, from Wash DC to SA Aug 1985. I gave him $4,000 and a one-way plane ticket for the car. (The price was actually above market 25 years ago, but as a Charger fan, I knew this one was rare and worth it). To this day, I have the entire paper-trail from the 1st tank of gas and oil change to every repair over the last 40+ yrs. I also have the original Warranty booklet w/CertiCard, owner's manual and AirTemp A/C manual. Even the spare tire has never been down. Wherever I take this car it gets noticed. Maybe some remember the Dukes of Hazard TV show from the 80's or the more recent movie of the same name or one of the best car chase scenes from the movie Bullitt (yes, that was a '68 Charger that kicked-ass on a Steve McQueen's Mustang). All I know is the 68-70 Chargers posses some of the most artful sheetmetal ever designed, wrapped around some of Chrysler's best engineering for it's time. By-the-way, the name Christine comes from the movie of the same name. That Plymouth Fury had the same rare color as my Charger. And after owning a car for nearly 25 years, there has to be a bond between man and machine. |
