Through the rear view mirror.................

by Tom

Beginning with mid-march, our commitment to SACC began tenuously. The weather was uncooperative, the crowds were small and the new rules to comply with city food handling codes were confusing and frustrating. But, we managed to hang in there and complete our six weeks. as a result, we will be receiving a check for $344 which was the amount of the final weeks proceeds. As I'm the the treasurer of SACC, I will be writing the check this week! I want to thank all those who came out to help at one time or another......Beast, Roland, Billy, Eric, Logan, Brett, Tom B, Bubba and Donnie. If I missed any one who helped....oops, sorry.

Fiesta San Antonio began mid-April. With all the activities going on during Fiesta, finding time for the newsletter was very difficult. Sorry it's late, but here it is. The crowds seemed bigger that ever in spite of  of the rain. NIOSA, Cornyation, King William fair, the river parade, the Battle of Flowers parade, the Fiesta Flambeau parade, all the parties (including our own pre fiesta party) during the parade period, the after Fiesta parties...whew, no wonder it took so long to recuperate!  Can't wait for next year!!

May 1st was the LaBahia Corridor Cruise. We had two participants. Russell in his '56 Packard and me in my '67 Ambassador. we left the tri-point area at 8:30 with our first stop in Lavernia, that was followed by Sutherland Springs, Market days in Floresville, Stockdale and finally Seguin for their big car show in the town square. There were probably 200 cars in that show. All of the towns had a welcoming committee who greeted all the participants. it was a great cruise and if you missed it, you missed a great time. don't forget that in the fall there will be the Hill Country cruise.

May 15th a group of us made it to Dick's Classic Car Museum in San Marcus, First we stopped at Woody's BBQ down the street from the Museum for some really good food. Woody's is a car theme BBQ place so it seemed very appropriate. we then made it over to the museum. There was a wonderful collection of beautiful cars. a Packard limo, several Duesenbergs, several Packards, Studebakers, some Cords, a Tucker and a great assortment of other makes. this museum is well worth the $10 entrance fee. if you get the Chance, you definitely NEED to go for a visit.

GUADALUPE STATE PARK

By popular request, we're going back to Guadalupe state park on June 19th for a picnic and a dip in the river. met at my house at 11am and we'll caravan up Blanco rd to hwy 46. the park entrance is about a mile west of 1604 and Blanco rd. as usual this will be a pot luck so bring food to share! we will probably need some one to go early and claim a good spot. this is summer and the park will probably be crowded.

PRIDEFEST SA

On June 12th will be the annual Pridefest celebration from 12 to 11pm. volunteers are needed to work the booths. if you can help, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the committee.

 GAY PRIDE SA

July the 3rd is Gay Pride SA. San Antonio is fortunate to have two pride celebrations. this is the one with the parade. we will be asked for convertibles to transport local dignitaries. but we still want sedans and coupes to represent the club. please join us for the parade!

PARTY AT DONNIE'S

July 17th is the party at Donnie's Helotes home. he's been working hard on his yard having done a lot of new landscaping. this will be a pot-luck. again bring food to share. it's starts at noon. come have a great time! bring a car for some photo ops.

 ACE WEEKEND

here's a correction. I had put in the calendar the wrong dates for ACE Weekend. the correct dates are August 5th - the 8th. as we've done in the past, we are working the registration. during our last club meeting, I was asked to see if we can do two cocktail parties. the answer is yes we can. when the schedule for the cocktail parties comes out, I will put us down for two parties. for our members who have never done ACE Weekend, this is a four day party consisting of several cocktail parties in the various participating bars, a hat contest, raffles, two dinners, a breakfast, and a finale show. residents of san antonio, Bexar county and the immediate counties surrounding pay $10 to participate. it's free to participants from outside the area. so if you are from any area outside san antonio, Bexar, Wilson, medina, kendal, guadalupe and Atascosa county, you pay nothing. there is also a raffle for a 42" flat screen TV with built in blue ray DVD player. tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. many other prizes are being raffled. all money raised after expenses go to local aids related charities chosen in September. come have a g reat time!

I attended the 33rd annual National Rolls-Royce Owners' Club Inter-regional event held in Orlando, Florida in February. The event this year was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of C. S. Rolls and was named Wheels-to-Wings.

The event started on Wednesday and ended on Sunday. The host hotel was the Gaylord Palms. Gaylord hotels, of which Texas has one in the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, are known for their massive glass domed central courtyards that contain a tropical paradise with waterfalls, exotic birds and animals, restaurants, shops, etc.

The glass domed courtyard was the location for the opening reception/dinner, complete with a new Rolls-Royce Phantom and a new Rolls-Royce Convertible (Drop Head in British speak) in the center of the domed courtyard where we visited and dined.

On Thursday the event offered a variety of bus tours to local sites. I opted for the bus tour to the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. One of the attendees I met on Wednesday evening was going to Kennedy as well. However, he felt he could not manage getting on and off the bus. So, he suggested that I drive his car for him instead of taking the bus. I agreed as long as he would explain the operation of the car, as he had told me that the car has some different procedures to follow. The car I got to drive to and from the Kennedy Space Center was a new (2005) Rolls-Royce Phantom! What a treat to get to experience the Phantom on a longer drive. The car was Silver with a light gray interior. The car drove very well and sure got the looks from fellow motorists.

Thursday evening was a performance of La Nouba (Cirque de Soleil) in downtown Disney followed by dinner at Wolfgang Pucks in downtown Disney. I had seen La Nouba before and enjoyed seeing it again.

Friday evening, I rode in a Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph to the Bentley/Rolls-Royce dealership party. Delicious food and beverage, live jazz, new Bentley's and Rolls-Royce's, what an evening. We were able to tour the repair shop and board a bus that took us to the dealerships restoration shop. What a place! They do Pebble Beach level restorations on all makes and models. We got to see several vintage Aston Martins, Lamborghini's, Rolls-Royce's, Packard's and an early 1900s Pierce-Arrow all in different stages of restoration. What a treat! I was again asked to drive the new Phantom from the dealership party back to the Gaylord Palms. The sacrifices we must make!

Saturday was the car show. The show was held at the Fantasy of Flight Museum. The museum has many airplanes that operate. For instance, the museum opened up the big doors and brought out three World War I I era Mustangs, one of which they started and flew for us.

The car show was participants choice, like the voting we do for cars at Golden Girls. This is unusual for the Rolls club. We also got to experience a ride in a 1930s era Bi-plane. What fun! Getting to soar above Orange groves, getting to see a sea plane land on the water and racing cars on the interstate. We had lunch with Tuskeegee Airmen, who had interesting stories to share with us.

Saturday evening was the Awards Banquet at the Gaylord Palms. In the banquet room there was a 1910 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and a 1930 Bentley Six liter racer. What a treat! The evening was topped off with a lecture from an expert who came in from England to speak about C. S. Rolls, who was interested in motorcars and flight.

Sunday, was goodbyes and brunch and then off to the airport for me.

The Inter-regional will be held in Austin TX in February or March of 2011. I am working on the details as I write this article. One change for next year's event will be that the Saturday Rolls-Royce and Bentley car show will be open to the public and there will be an admission fee that will benefit a charity. Normally the car show is not open to the pub
